Start with 16 hours per year.
Miami-Dade County states that mechanics must complete 16 hours of continuing education each year. The mechanic permit application asks renewing applicants to provide education evidence for each year requested.
Use your existing permit and renewal notice to establish the period you are renewing. A search result advertising “16 hours” does not, by itself, show that the course fits your permit category or renewal period.
One year or two? Match the total.
Proof of 16 hours of continuing education.
Proof of 32 hours of continuing education.

The county form lists both renewal options. Confirm the appropriate period and supporting records for your own application before purchasing education. Keep certificates organized by course, completion date and documented hours.
Identify your permit type first.
The county application distinguishes certified mechanics or technicians, exempt mechanics and apprentices. A renewal for an existing certified technician is a different process from an initial application or an apprentice permit.
Review the category shown on your current record and use the relevant county instructions. If your status has changed, ask the county which application and evidence apply before assuming that a continuing-education course is your only requirement.
Check the course before you pay.
Choose education for automotive mechanics or technicians that fits the county’s requirements for your renewal. Courses for construction contractors, tradespeople or motor-vehicle dealers can also mention 16 hours, but serve different licensing processes.
- Confirm the provider’s approval and that the exact course is appropriate for your renewal.
- Check the documented number of hours and any required subject coverage.
- Ask what study, assessment and identity requirements must be completed.
- Confirm the certificate’s format, delivery timing and any correction process.
- Read the total course price and any separate retake or material charges.
A clear answer from the provider is more useful than a broad claim such as “state approved.” For a question about acceptance, use the county contact details on its current licensing page.
Keep an organized set of records.
Start a renewal folder with your current permit number, the applicable county application, your continuing-education certificates and the supporting documents requested for your permit type. Check that your name and other identifying information are consistent across the records.
The county application includes a checklist. Use that current checklist as the authority for what to submit; this guide helps you prepare, but does not replace an individual county review.
